Joice, James Edward

Lieut. James Edward Joice, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Joice, 242 Wellington Street, was serving with the Royal Canadian Regiment in the battle of the Lamone River in Italy when he was killed in action on December 4, 1944. He was buried with others of his fallen comrades in the British Military Cemetery at Ravenna. He enlisted with his Regiment in 1935, served three years and then re-enlisted with the R.C.R. in March, 1940. He served in England, North Africa and Italy. Born on February 26, 1916, at Bexley Heath, Kent, England, he came to Brantford with his family in 1920. He attended Alexandra Public School and graduated from the Collegiate Institute. He had many interests in the community even as a boy, singing in St. Jude's Church Choir and belonging to the Boy Scouts. He joined the Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles and was one of that unit's finest athletes, carrying off the boxing championship in one of the pre-war years.
